"Getsy" Release Notes

New features and improvements to enhance the experience for editors and end users alike

Meow! Getsy is here – the vocal, affectionate, and adventurous leash-trained kitty of our own Chris Meyer, senior director of Enterprise Systems & Support. The Getsy release rolled out to Sites@Duke Pro across four deployments between November 2024 and April 2025.

Getsy is a busy little cat that includes a LOT of updates, so let's get down to business!

New Features

Events Enhancements

Getsy the cat makes the Meyer family's lives better – and he makes our events better, as well!

  • We've added an Additional Info field to the Event content type, which will display beneath the Description on the front end. This gives you more flexibility in what data you can display, and you can add site-specific details that may not make sense in a more broadly available Duke Event Calendar listing.

  • You can now add a Featured Image to imported events, giving your event pages more visual impact. Since Event Calendar feeds do not include a featured image, the media you add to this field will not get overwritten by the feed import. Similarly, we made a few other fields editable on imported events, such as Cost, Additional Links, Additional Location Information, and Alternate Link.
  • Getsy updated the URL pattern for newly added events to improve clarity and search engine optimization. New event URLs will follow this pattern: /event/title-MM-DD-YYYY. Events that existed before this change will stay the same.

Profile pronouns

By user request, the Profile content type now includes an optional free-text Pronouns field. Text entered here will be displayed below the name on a Profile item. (Savvy readers may also notice a clue to our next release here!)

News List Grid layout

Our previous release, Ryder, added a grid layout for several list blocks. Getsy followed up by adding this feature to the News List, as well!

Smarter Search Results

Getsy adjusted search and filtering to help users find what they need faster and more accurately.

  • Filters on site search and Content Type List Pages now use OR logic within facets and AND logic across facets... Which means filtered results have become more consistent with the experience on popular search-based sites, so you will see the results sets you expect!
  • The total number of results updates instantly when you apply filters, giving you better visibility into what’s available.
  • Multi-word search queries, like "search the web," now return more consistent and relevant results – thanks to fine-tuning how the system treats common words, like "and" and "the," and prioritizes exact match phrases.
  • Titles and Profiles are more highly prioritized in results, bringing commonly searched content to the top.
  • The search bar and results interface got a subtle facelift for better usability and visual alignment.

Resolving Known Issues

Getsy the cat enjoys catching cicadas in his backyard, so it's only fitting that his namesake release also squashed some pesky bugs!

Instagram fix

Image
Embedded Instagram content showing both an account and a single post

Our Social Media Embed block shares content from third-party social media platforms – but, when one of these services changes code on their end, it can prevent the embeds from working as expected on our sites. Getsy resolved one such long-standing issue with Instagram embeds.

You can now successfully embed an Instagram account or a single post by posting the account or post's unique URL into the Social Media Link field.

New Guidance for working with box content

The Iframe content block allows you to embed content from selected external sources, including Box. However, Getsy uncovered an issue where embedded Box files are not displaying consistently – across different users, devices, or browsers. They work sometimes, but appear broken other times, and it is out of our control.

Because of this unpredictable behavior, our new recommendation is to link to Box files instead of embedding them in the Iframe block.

Profile & scholars Profile Summaries

An astute customer pointed out that the optional Summary field was not displaying as expected for Profiles and Scholars Profiles – thank you! Now, with Getsy's changes, content in that field will display correctly on list pages, list blocks, and content references.

additional Fixes

Getsy also identified solutions for the following:

  • Lists displaying a "NaN-NaN of 0 results" message for certain users
  • Difficult to find desired file in Transcript autocomplete field on Audio/Soundcloud media items
  • Inconsistencies with anchor links that point to anchors on another page
  • Edited taxonomy terms not updating consistently on the front end
  • Text alignment not working for table headers
  • News & Events displaying Related items only when tagged with imported Categories
  • Iframe embeds from Looker Studio, formerly Google Data Studio, not working as expected due to a URL pattern change on their end

A Better Experience for Site Editors

Getsy made a number of updates for improved usability, consistency, and security. In addition to his behind-the-scenes upgrades to the latest Drupal core and module versions as well as our deployment and Gatsby build processes, Getsy also showed his appreciation for our site editors through these user-facing enhancements.

Easy-to-remember Link to Content Site

We've made it easier to remember the URL of your Drupal administrative "content" site.

Now, adding "/admin" to the end of your production URL – e.g., yoursite.duke.edu/admin – will automatically redirect you to the login screen. You'll still need to be on the Duke network or VPN to access it.

By way of this change, the URL alias "admin" is no longer available for general use. The system will prevent you from using it for any of your content items.

Creating LInks to List Pages

When linking to internal content, we highly encourage using the autocomplete field to search for and select the desired page. However, Content Type List Pages weren't available within the autocomplete field... Until now! Getsy has added your list pages as autocomplete options, so you can create links to them just like any other piece of content.

Similar to the /admin URL restriction above, the system now prevents your content from sharing a URL alias that is already being used for a Content Type List Page. You also cannot create a List Page URL that is already in use by other content. As an example, your News List Page and a Page called "News" cannot both use the alias "/news."

Making the Project content type more flexible

Project is already known as our most flexible content type, but now it's even easier to make it fit your content. By renaming "Project Status" and "Related Projects" on Project pages to the more agnostic "Status" and "Projects," you can repurpose this content type as needed without the Project label getting in the way.

updating filenames to Prevent Media issues

Filenames that include spaces and special characters are often to blame for issues with media items. From now on, if such a file is uploaded, the system will automatically update the filename to remove these problematic characters. For example, a file named "trial & error.jpg" will be seamlessly added to the file system as "trial-error.jpg".

Adjustable Table Columns

By user request, editors can now adjust the width of columns within tables. By clicking the Source button in the WYSIWYG editor, advanced users can add pixel widths within <th> and <td> tags, such as width="250".

Design Optimization

Getsy tightened up layout spacing, adjusted mobile and tablet views, and improved accessibility – for a more balanced and consistent look, and to ensure everyone can interact with your content. In particular, we:

  • Optimized the Carousel Hero layout so key content is more prominent on the page – less scrolling, more impact.

  • Adjusted the Event content type to address issues with incorrect date displays and extra white space in lists.
  • Reworked a recent accessibility change (back in the Charlie release) that added arrow icons next to all linked headers – making it less overwhelming when many of these appear on a single page
