A Summer Refresher: Duke's Updated Web Accessibility Guidelines

Sites Pro content editors invited to attend one of two sessions

Sites@Duke Pro users are encouraged to attend one of two web accessibility refresher courses this summer! Sites Pro websites already incorporate the latest standards in accessibility, but content editors are still responsible for making their content accessible by following best practices like using headings, descriptive links, and good alt text. Please review the details below from Duke's Accessibility team, and plan to attend one of the sessions.

Also, note that web.accessibility.duke.edu is a Sites@Duke Pro site!

Duke's Updated Web Accessibility Guidelines

Supporting Duke’s commitment to make web content accessible to everyone, the Accessibility team proudly announces the launch of a revamped Web Accessibility site. The updated website is a powerful tool for both educating and training the Duke Community. It now includes a "how to…" section, with information about web accessibility specifically for the roles of content creator, designer, developer, and to details on how to do an accessibility assessment yourself.

Since 2017, new and substantially modified public Duke websites have been required to conform to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 AA before launch. That requirement remains in place, but we are now encouraging that new sites be developed, as feasible, in accordance with WCAG 2.1 AA. The web accessibility office has been supporting the new requirements in anticipation of this update. As a result, most standard Duke websites have already incorporated many of the new accessibility features.

The best way to ensure your site meets Duke's Web Accessibility Guidelines is to request a free assessment by the Web Accessibility team.

Joel Crawford-Smith, Duke’s senior web accessibility administrator, will hold two trainings Tuesday, June 27 at 10:00 and Thursday, July 25 at 2:00 for website managers, content creators, designers, and developers in support of the changes.
